I have used BGInfo with windows systems for years. The following is a very good article from Mike Terrill that includes vbs scripts for determining the BIOS Mode and Secure Boot state.

VMware has released a new security advisory related to spectre/meltdown for their virtual appliances. For now, there are pending patches and links to KB’s detailing workarounds to disable SSH and most shell access:
